Wedding Accessories - Jump the Broom!!!!

I specialize in creating Wedding Brooms. For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, "Jumping the Broom". It is one tradition that should never, ever die.

Some people put them up in their homes for faith (some people call it "Good Luck"), to "sweep" (get it) away all negative stuff that is in the home and what energy people bring into your home; others, jump the broom. The significance of this tradition is to sweep old things away and cross (jump) over into a new life together. When I create a Broom, I create something that you can hang over your mantel when your special day is over. I also give you a manifest to explain to you the meaning, origin and how to incorporate the "Jumping of the Broom" into your ceremony.

I create the traditional sweep broom and the more modern one which is longer and curly.

I was talking to a lady from Nigeria and she stated that this is not an African tradition.  I told her that it was because during slavery, African-Americans were not allowed to get married, so what we did to join the union,  is jump the broom.  The owners thought it was funny that we would even want to marry.  Marriage to owners gave us power and authority within our families and communities and they did not want that, too much power.  It is ok to live together but to marry?  Illegal, sham, an abomination.

So we JUMP to join in the sight of G-d, family and friends, we JUMPED to show that we need families, we need our man and women, we JUMP because it was our right to marry whoever we please.  There is so much more regarding this renewed now tradition, that this starts your research.

In the 18th century, it was stated that jumping the broom was called an "irregular marriage", the broomstick wedding or the sham marriage, the marriage of doubtful validity; but for some , it was called a chance to love and be loved.  It was called strength in darkness.  It was called family and community.

The Jumping of the Broom ceremony is held to the end of the Wedding ceremony.  After the Officials perform the Joining, then the couple will jump the broom and walk out to start the beginning of a new life.
